The Sterling Police Department (SPD) has been at the heart of community safety in Sterling since the city's early years. Originally established when the city was young, the department has grown and evolved alongside Sterling as it transformed from a manufacturing hub—once known as the "Hardware Capital of the World"—into the modern, diversified community it is today.
In 1991, the department adopted a new community-policing philosophy to build stronger partnerships between officers and citizens.
Under the leadership of Chief Edward Bartel, who became Chief of Police in 2025 after more than 30 years of dedicated service with the Sterling Police Department, SPD has continued to be guided by strong leadership, institutional knowledge, and a deep commitment to the community it serves.
Mission Statement: "As members of the Sterling Police Department, we will be the model of excellence in policing by working in partnership with all members of our community. We recognize the great trust placed in us and will provide order, service, and safety in a respectful manner to promote a secure community. Our commitment to all we serve is to enforce the laws and establish relationships through integrity, cooperation, and compassion."
From the banks of the Rock River to the neighborhoods of Sterling, SPD continues to work hand-in-hand with the community—keeping pace with change, embracing innovation, and ensuring the safety and quality of life for every resident and visitor.
